This wood was originally used as pallets for 20-ton mining machines and was laid to waste in a mine near Durban. The black stains the original nails left in the wood tell the story of the journey from America to the Shores of South Africa. This piece of wood also displays another phenomenon called spalting. This describes the change in wood colouration caused by mould while the tree is maturing.
